3 Things To Think About When Getting a Fence For Your Big Dog

It can be extremely difficult keeping your large dog, that has loads of energy, happily contained. Larger breeds love to jump, climb and are not looking to stay restrained in the backyard.

If you have a big dog like that, it is important that you take a few things into consideration before choosing the type of fence to add to your yard. Here are three things to consider when selecting your ideal furry friend fence.
>>Big Dog Equals Big Fence

Shorter fences are not likely to keep your bigger dogs contained. Dogs are strong creatures. Be sure that you use high quality materials and that it’s properly installed. Not only does your fence need to be strong, but it needs to be tall, as well. You should consider purchasing at least a five or six foot fence.
Huskies, Great Danes, English Mastiffs and even Labradors require higher fences like that. Some dog owner “fix” the problem by adding height extensions to the existing fence, making it taller and taller. This only teaches your dog to jump higher, so your best bet is to tear down the old fence and install a taller fence.
>>Privacy is Necessary

While your dog doesn’t need privacy, s/he certainly doesn’t need to see what’s on the other side. Chain link fences will only drive your dog nuts by teasing and taunting him with what they are missing and what they cannot have.
Solid panel fences are private and are a lot more aesthetically pleasing. They will also block your pup’s view of people, other dogs and small chase-able creatures which can eliminate excess barking and escape attempts.
A happier dog means happier neighbors and by-passers which means a happier owner. You know your dog best of all. You know her behaviors, temperament, and triggers. So take a little time before selecting your fence to consider what is necessary and what will be best for your pooch.
>>Stop the Escape Artist

The first step in stopping your escapee is knowing how they are getting out. Are they digging, climbing, or are they jumping? If they’re digging, you may consider lining the surrounding ground with chain-link fence or chicken wire.
The barrier is frustrating to dogs and they’ll give up digging eventually. If your pup is a leaper, you may want to consider installing some sort of barrier atop your fence. If they are climbers, you will definitely want to make sure the fence is climb-proof.

Chain link fences are easy climbed by humans and dogs! Solid panel fences, however, have a flat, slippery surface. This makes climbing much more difficult for climbers; humans and dogs alike. Climbers and jumpers are smart and resourceful. So make sure you don’t have any boosters like chairs, planters or anything else your dog can climb onto near your fence.

FIVE TELLTALE SIGNS IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR OLD FENCE

Many people love the classic look and beauty of a traditional wooden fence, but have concerns about its ability to last, especially in humid, moist weather like we have in Florida. Now, we have wooden fencing that stands up better than ever to the elements, with new, longer lasting pressure treating and durable staining products.

But how can you tell when your old fence has served its purpose and it is time to replace it? Read on for our tips on when to replace your wooden fence.

1. ROT

In Tennessee, wooden fences are really stressed by our extremely moist, humid climate that is so conducive to rot, so if wood is your first choice, be sure to choose the most rot resistant wood for your fencing you can choose. Our consultants at Fence Kings can help you make the right choice.

Whenever possible, avoid positioning your fence where standing water is likely to gather.

A bit of local rot on a board can be replaced. But if you notice rotting across the fence posts and boards, it’s worth looking into a wooden fence replacement.

2. LEANING BOARDS ON OLD FENCE

Many elements can cause your old fence to lean. Wind, rain, and erosion all play a part.

If you see some slight leaning in one section, you can usually adjust a few posts to fix the issue. It’s best to repair those sections as soon as you notice any leaning. Severe wind can cause a larger section to lean or even rip the fence down.

When your fence is leaning significantly, the structure and strength are compromised. Then it is time to replace the fence.

3. HOLES, SPLIT AND MISSING BOARDS

Even the best wood begins to crack and split after years of being exposed to the elements. Sun, rain, freezing and thawing will take a toll on even the best fence.

Again, if you have a missing board or two, you can replace those sections. Same if you have a split board. However, if a large part of your fence is warped and split, consider a wooden fence replacement.

Holes in wooden fences often indicate the presence of insects or animals eating or scratching the fence. If you live in the country, you’ll likely see more damage to your fence than someone in an urban area.

Holes can compromise the strength of the fence. Large holes will also not allow the fence to do its job of keeping kids and animals in the fence and other critters out.

4. LOOSE AND MISSING FASTENERS

Your fence is not entirely protected from the elements. We recommend great products like Thompsons Water Sealer to help combat the elements, but nothing is completely fail safe. As a result, over time the hardware used in the fence will become loose or fall out.

Yes, you can replace these nails and screws many times. But, once the wood has reached a certain age, it is not strong enough to handle new hardware.

If that happens, you guessed it, it’s time to replace your old fence. Did you know that there are many different styles of wood fences you can choose from, or we can design a unique fence just for you?

5. WOBBLY FENCE

One of the telltale signs that it’s time to replace a fence is when the structural integrity of the fence is questionable.

A wobbly fence can be a result of loose or missing hardware, rot or holes.

If you push on a fence it should not wobble. Well, due to the fact that they are not attached at the top, it is entirely normal for some wobble at the top. However, if you find that your fence can be pushed or pulled in areas, this is a sign that it’s time for a wooden fence replacement.

FINAL WORDS

Natural beauty and a wide variety of styles make a wood fence a solid choice for many yards. If your fence is no longer a sturdy, beautiful addition to your home, it’s time to get rid of that old fence.

Wood fences can be stained any color to coordinate with their surroundings or you can choose to display the wood’s natural beauty.

MIXING WOOD AND ORNAMENTAL FENCING STYLES

CREATING A UNIQUE LOOK THAT MAKES YOUR YARD STAND OUT

When choosing a fence for your home, many people feel like they must select one fence type for the entire yard. With the growing emphasis of creating outdoor spaces for entertaining, backyard retreats, and outdoor “rooms,” it is becoming increasingly common to see a yard fenced with several styles and materials that reflect different functions and budgets.

As you walk around your yard, there are various fencing needs you might see, and different fencing types will be best in different areas. The fence in your yard can be a backdrop that highlights features of your landscape, a boundary to keep kids and animals contained, a structure to create a private oasis…the functions of a fence are varied, even within a single yard.

Addressing this by mixing fence types, incorporating harmonious transitions, and choosing complimenting styles can create a unique and beautiful outdoor space.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN MIXING FENCE STYLES

FENCING MATERIALS:

Mixing fence materials can create a rich yard full of different textures. Wood and ornamental steel have an elegant look that can be combined to showcase your yard and add a warm, classy touch. In some yards, using chain link or vinyl in one area serves functional and budget needs, then mixing in wood or steel fencing in another area can increase curb appeal or create a special outdoor space that the family will enjoy. Beautiful wood or ornamental steel gates can frame an entryway and give it a stately, rustic, or cozy feel. The possibilities are endless to give each part of your yard a unique feel.

TRANSITIONS:

When mixing different fencing materials and heights, the transition from one fence to another must be carefully designed. Designers use elements such as shrubs and trees to interrupt and soften the transition. Plants and vines can also draw attention away from the transition point. Paint or stains can help the fence blend into its surroundings.

FUNCTION:

In certain circumstances mixing different fence types is a function of necessity. You may want open fencing around your yard that preserves the view, but have areas you would like to keep hidden, such as areas containing recycling bins, garbage cans, air conditioners, and sheds. Creative placement of solid fencing can also keep carports, parking areas and neighbor yards from view.

In other circumstances, you may have different functional goals for your yard. You may want a private, enclosed oasis in your backyard, but a warm inviting picket fence in your front yard. You may want a tall, safe fence around the pool, but a shorter, open fence between you and your favorite neighbors.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT FENCE

Having a variety of appealing choices when it comes to your home’s fence shouldn’t feel overwhelming. Mixing different varieties of fencing lets you customize your yard and driveway, creating the outdoor space you’ve always dreamed of while also accomplishing the functionality you need.

The design professionals at Fence Kings of Nashville will not only help you choose the fence type and design that will fulfill the vision you have for your yard but will also construct that fence using our years of expertise, ensuring it’s done right and will hold up for years to come. BREAKING DOWN THE BENEFITS OF FIVE FENCING MATERIALS

Want to have a fence installed around your yard? The biggest decision you will need to make is what kind of material you use to build it. You will want to know the benefits of five of the most popular materials to assist your decision-making process.

Aluminum

Many homeowners love aluminum because the material does not rust like iron fencing material does. Aluminum stays relatively maintenance-free, since it will not require sealing or painting aluminum over the years to maintain its looks. The versatility of aluminum will help the material conform to any elevated landscape, such as slopes that require an edge on the ground without any gaps.Know that aluminum fencing is an environmentally friendly fencing material. Aluminum is a material that is easy to recycle, so when the day to replace the fence eventually comes, you can have peace of mind knowing that the material can be repurposed by making it into something else.

Chain-Link

Chain-link fencing is often thought of as being unable to provide privacy. While the lack of privacy may be true at first, you can always modify a chain-link fence to transform it later. For example, you can place metal or plastic slats between the links of the fence, which will make it difficult for others to see into your yard. This gives you the option to add privacy or take it away when you want to.Some homeowners enjoy using the metal fencing material to grow plants that weave through the links. The gaps make chain link a great material for climbing plants. The price of chain-link fencing will also make it an affordable fencing material for any budget.

Wood

Wood is an easy material to repair if your fence becomes damaged. Each board on a wood fence can be removed and replaced with a new board if needed, making it possible to fix a wood fence with a minimal amount of materials on hand.Pressure-treated wood has the capability to keep insects away from the material and last up to 30 years. You will get extra longevity out of the pressure-treated wood and limit the amount of maintenance that needs to be done in the form of sealing and painting. That said, painting is always an option with wood fencing if you want to change up the color.

PVC

PVC material will be impermeable, which makes it a long-lasting material that can easily outperform other materials. There is no painting, staining, or sealing involved with PVC material, and PVC will do a great job at maintaining its natural color over time.PVC is manufactured with the color throughout all of the material, so even deep scratches will not damage the look of a PVC fence that much. This highly durable material will be a great choice for those who have pets in their backyard that can claw at the fencing material. The installation of PVC fencing is also quite easy, with there being large sections of fencing rather than individual pieces that need to be placed.

How Much Will I Save Installing My Own Aluminum Fence?

Installing a fence seems like a simple project that can save you a lot of money. If you have a relatively flat and rectangular backyard, how hard can it be?

While installing a wood fence may be simple for a backyard construction project, if you choose an aluminum fence, you may encounter more difficulty installing it yourself. People choose aluminum for many reasons: It’s durable, it allows you to see through your fence to things outside your yard ( like a nearby pond or woods), and it’s perfect for growing fence-friendly vines. It can be an unforgiving material, though. Here’s what to expect if you’re trying to install an aluminum fence.

Here are the supplies you need

In addition to the fence components, you will need a huge number of tools and supplies.
Included in this list are:

  • A post-hole digger or power auger
  • A concrete mixer or wheelbarrow used for this purpose
  • Concrete mix
  • A shovel
  • A hoe (for mixing concrete)
  • A long level
  • Stakes
  • String
  • A hacksaw
  • A rubber mallet
  • A hammer
  • A screwdriver or drill

Some of these tools can be rented from your local hardware store or big box home supply store. Others are consumable products (concrete is a one-use-only type of thing!), so you’ll need to buy those new.

At this point, you’re already investing in a lot more than just the fence itself. Installing a fence shouldn’t be something you do too often – you want your fence to last, and a well-maintained aluminum fence can survive 20 to 40 years. Expensive tools, like power augers, therefore might not be of much use in the future, producing a pretty dismal return on your investment if your goal is to save money by installing a fence yourself.

Here are the steps to installing an aluminum fence

There are seven basic steps to installing an aluminum fence, and they may be easy or difficult, depending on your yard, materials, and level of experience.

  • Check your local zoning laws for any fence requirements, such as type, height, and setback. You are also legally required to call local utility companies to ask about any buried utility lines on or near your property.
  • Begin to stake out your fence, using the stakes and string. The string should run along the outside of where your fence will be placed.
  • Dig your post holes. This is where a power auger saves time and energy. The holes should be as deep as specified by the type and height of fence you are installing.
  • Place your posts in the appropriate holes. Mix concrete and fill the holes until they are filled two to three inches from the top. Be sure to plumb and level your posts consistently as the concrete dries, and brace them if necessary.
  • Insert your aluminum fence rails into the posts until they click, depending on the brand of aluminum fence you are installing.
  • Attach end posts to walls if needed.
  • Install your gates, latches, and other accessories, such as post caps or integrated lighting, after you have installed and leveled the rest of your fence.

Is there an easier way to install an aluminum fence?

Obviously, there are more steps involved in this process than the average person considers when thinking about DIY aluminum fence installation. You may be considering exactly how much your time is worth. How many evenings and weekends will you need to dedicate to installing an aluminum fence in your own yard? What else could you be doing with that time?

It may actually be more economically advantageous to pay for fence installation when you want an aluminum fence. Here’s what you can expect from the right fence installation company:

  • Someone who will check on local ordinances, including HOA rules and laws in your town or city, as well as call about utilities on your behalf.
  • Someone who already owns the proper tools and supplies, which are included in your estimate.
  • Someone who can give you a hard estimated date of completion, based on experience installing many fences.
  • Someone who can guarantee their work – no awkwardly leaning fence posts in sight!

In the end, having a fence installed by a professional fence installation company may actually be cheaper than or equal to the amount you spend on DIY installation. Consider your time, supplies, and tool costs, and it might be worth it to you and your family to simply have the experts do the work of aluminum fence installation.

WHAT TYPE OF FENCE IS BEST? WOOD OR VINYL?

Used to create privacy and distinguish property lines, a fence is a common property feature. They are made from various types of materials, and come in all shapes and sizes. Wood and vinyl, however, are the most commonly used materials for fences in Middle Tennessee. Both are also very easy to install. There are distinct differences between these two materials, and both offer distinct advantages. Before deciding which type of fence you should choose, consider the pros and cons of both wood and vinyl fences.

Vinyl
Vinyl fencing offers several benefits. These fences can be made in a variety of different styles and colors. Vinyl does not require any painting or staining, and it comes in ready-to-install strips. Because it has a non-porous surface, cleaning a vinyl fence is easy; just spray a hose, and the dirt comes right off. They also won’t split, crack or rot, and they can’t be damaged by termites.

Wood
Wood fences are more cost effective than vinyl. They can be easily painted or stained to suit your taste, and wood can be customized into a variety of shapes and sizes. Wood is lightweight, which makes it easy to work with. It is also biodegradable, making it environmentally friendly.

The type of fence that is right for you depends on your specific needs. Whether you decide on wood or vinyl, if you want to have a fence installed in Tennessee, Fence Kings can help! We have been a leader in the Middle Tennessee fence installation for a long time and have installed more than you can shake a stick at! We offer both wood and vinyl fencing at affordable prices.

Pool Safety

POOL SAFETY

The first day of summer is right around the corner. The air is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and the sun is getting brighter. It’s time to enjoy the outdoors, get into the back yard with friends and family!  To escape the impending summer heat, many dip right into the nearest swimming pool.

At Fence Kings, it’s our goal to promote pool safety in the effort to keep our neighbors happy and healthy. According to the Safer Water Safety Foundation, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children five and under. Of all preschoolers who drown, 70% are in the presence of parents and 75% were “out of sight” for only five minutes or less. 98% of pool accidents happen at home, leaving full safety responsibilities to the pool owners. Pool safety is extremely important to us and to our customers.  To help, we offer pool safety tips as instructed by the California Health and Safety Code.

Fence Kings believes that the only time children should be by the pool is when they are under adult supervision. There are also additional preventative techniques to stop unexpected accidents. We recommended installing pool fence that are at least sixty inches tall. We recommend using vertical fencing because the vertical pickets limit footholds for a child to climb over the fence and into the pool area. Horizontal rails need to be spaced approx. 54”inches apart, preventing leverage for the children.  Also, it is important that any access gates through the enclosure open away from the swimming pool, and are self-closing with a self-latching device placed no lower than 60 inches above the ground.

Vertical pickets should not allow passage of a sphere equal to or greater than four inches in diameter. The wider the gaps, the more likely it is that the young children can use the gaps to  squeeze through. The same goes for the gap between the fence and the ground. The gap should not exceed two inches; otherwise this allows enough room for a small child to wedge their way through. Check with your local city and county’s for updates on pool safety codes and requirements as they may differ and will take precedence.

If you are interested in increasing your pool security, Fence Kings is here to help. We offer both metal and vinyl fencing to reinforce your pool area, as well as a selection of gates and locks for pool area entrances and exits. We also employ highly educated and experienced employees who can assist you about fence installation with the suggested pool safety requirements for your property. This investment will help improve your property, improve your safety, and improve your summer.

Take a cannonball dive into summer security and make it a safe one. At Fence Kings, we make good neighbors!
